Sample itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Alice Springs

After arriving in Alice Springs pick up your campervan and begin exploring some of the many attractions within Alice Springs. Alice’s attractions can be explored as 6 seperate discovery trails based on themes. Choose and explore one or more of these themes depending on your interests. The Communications theme for example includes the School of the Air (the worlds largest classroom) and the Old Telegraph station. Choose and explore one or more of these trails or the highlights from each. Pickup supplies from one of Alice Springs' major supermarkets at some stage during the day.

Day 2: Alice Springs - West MacDonnell Ranges:

A free day to relax and explore more of Alice Springs or alternatively take the opportunity to explore the spectacular gorges and gaps of the West MacDonnell Ranges at your own pace. The road is bitumen all the way till Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen Lodge. Choose from some of the 10 attractions depending on your fitness level and interests. If you visited the MacDonnell Ranges today, we recommend returning to Alice Springs tonight for your drive to Kings Canyon tomorrow.

Day 3: Alice Springs to Wattarka (Kings Canyon)

Spend part of today driving from Alice Springs to Kings Canyon. We recommend driving between these two locations during the hottest part of the day. Therefore spend the morning participating in a Hot Air Balloon ride (extra cost) or visit the Alice Desert Park. Mid morning depart Alice Springs arriving into Kings Canyon early enough to do the Kings Creek walk at the base of the canyon before enjoying a spectacular sunset overlooking the George Gill Range.

Day 4: Wattarka (Kings Canyon) to Uluru (Ayers Rock)

An early morning start gives you the opportunity to do the complete Kings Canyon rim walk during the coolest part off the day (subject to health and fitness). This walk is arguably the best walk in the Red Centre and highly recommended. After the walk spend the rest of the day driving from Wattarka to Uluru. Along the way stop over at Kings Creek Station a working cattle/camel station for lunch. You might even try one of their famous Kings Creek camel burgers. Arrive at Uluru and drive out to the Sunset viewing area for one the great experiences anywhere in the world. Sunset at Uluru is a must do.

Day 5: Exploring Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park

A magnificent day exploring the Kata-Tjuta National Park. Spend the time driving or walking around the base of the rock exploring the many aspects of this amazing monolith. A trip to Uluru is also about experiencing and understanding its cultural & spiritual significance. Self Discover or take one of the guided tours that inform about the local flora and fauna, bush foods and the Aboriginal Dreamtime stories.

Day 6: Around Uluru (Kata Tjuta - The Olgas)

An early morning start for sunrise at Uluru before driving out to Kata Tjuta stopping off at the sunrise viewing area to experience the spectacular colour changes of The Olgas. Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) is a collection of weathered red domes, and many people believe Kata Tjuta is even more spectacular than the Rock. The Valley of the Winds Walk and Walpa Gorge allows you to complete your Kata Tjuta experience. A relaxing afternoon back at Uluru completes your day.

Day 7: Uluru to Alice Springs

An early wake up to experience sunrise and explore any of the attractions, walks or tours you may be interested in around Uluru. A peaceful 1 hr camel ride over big red sand dunes, a Guided Aboriginal tour at the base of Uluru are just 2 of the many options. After completing your morning adventure return begin the 450km drive back to Alice Springs. Your departure time will depend on the attractions you want to see from these two locations and along the Lasseter and Stuart Highways.

Day 8: Alice Springs to Tennant Creek

Today you begin driving north along the Stuart Highway, where you'll appreciate the enormity and hostility of the Australian landscape. Along the way you will come across one of Outback Australia's iconic landmarks the Devils Marbles. On arrival in Tennant Creek you'll find a variety of experiences. including a mining museum & underground mine tours.

Day 9: Tennant Creek to Katherine

Continue your journey north along the Stuart Hwy to Katherine. Tourism in this region centres around experiencing pubs and roadside stops with true outback character and the hardships associated with local history. Close to Katherine the landscape changes abruptly from a harsh desert environment to a lush tropical environment when you arrive at Mataranka. Break up today's long drive with a refreshing and invigorating swim at Mataranka Thermal Pool or nearby Bitter Springs.

Day 10: Around Katherine ( Katherine Gorge)

Drive the 30km from Katherine to the most visited landmark in the region. Katherine Gorge is carved through the Arnhemland plateau. It is a continuous gorge, running along perpendicular fault lines that are separated during the dry season by rock bars. The spectacle of the river, shear cliffs and rock art make this an excellent place to explore. Photos do not do this area justice.

Day 11: Katherine to Kakadu

Today has you departing Katherine and heading towards Kakadu National Park with the opportunity to stop over for a swim at picturesque Edith Falls or visit historic Pine Creek. World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park is a fantastic national park rich in waterfalls, swimming holes, wetlands and aboriginal culture. this afternoon you have the opportunity to visit some of lookouts in the south of the park before arriving at Cooinda and the stunning yellow waters wetland.

Day 12: Explore Kakadu National Park:

Today is a full day exploring Kakadu National Park. Depending on your interests consider a guided tour into Jim Jim / Twin Falls. Alternatively spend the day exploring the key attractions in the north and central region of Kakadu. This morning explore the incredible rock art and walk at Nourlangie where there is evidence of occupation stretching back twenty thousand years. Continue north to Jabiru and visit the displays at the award winning Bowali Visitor Centre before spending the afternoon exploring the East Alligator Region (best short walks in Kakadu). Cap off a great day with sunset at Ubirr (Must Do!).

Day 13: Kakadu to Litchfield

Depart Kakadu National Park and head to Litchfield National Park along the Arnhem Hwy, stopping at Fogg Conservation Reserve & Window on the Wetlands Visitors Centre. You also have the option to take a Jumping Crocodile Cruise (extra cost). Litchfield offers year round swimming among attractive and easily accessible waterfalls and is commonly referred to as a highlight of most peoples trip in the Top End. Characterised by a spring fed Plateau waterfalls flow all year round at Litchfield.

Day 14: Litchfield to Darwin

A free morning to relax and explore more of Litchfield National Park before returning to Darwin. Spend as little or as long as you like at Litchfield depending on what time you want to arrive in Darwin. Alternatively spend the day exploring the Territory Wildlife Park and Berry Springs before returning to Darwin. Please note Vehicle needs to be returned before 4pm.
